Levering Mill House
327 Levering Mill Road, Bala Cynwyd
In the 1920s, the lively and influential Women’s Club of Bala Cynwyd built Levering Mill House to become the first Bala Cynwyd Library. Designed by local architects Savery & Scheetz, the library served both adults and children until 1974, when it transitioned to a Senior Center overseen and managed by Lower Merion Township. The Senior Center closed in 2012, and the building now stands vacant, occasionally hosting community meetings and other similar functions. Its prominent location near the intersection of Levering Mill Road and Montgomery Avenue makes it an anchor that has served the community for nearly 100 years.
This handsome building faces two key challenges that threaten its long-term viability—a deteriorating physical condition and a lack of use. The Women’s Club also manages the adjacent property, the Women’s Club Ballroom. Now it faces the challenge of taking care of two historic buildings with expensive maintenance and restoration costs. While the Ballroom remains a popular event space for weddings and parties, there is a clear need for a longer-term strategy for using and maintaining both spaces.
